What Is the Health Index and How Was It Developed?

At Komünite, we believe that good food should be both delicious and nourishing. That’s why we prioritise natural, balanced and wholesome dishes. Developed with this approach in mind, our Health Index is designed to help guests make informed choices and find options that suit different dietary needs.

The Komünite Health Index rates the food and beverages on our menu on a scale from 1 (least healthy) to 5 (healthiest), based on 15 health-related criteria. These include cooking methods, additive content, fibre levels, salt content, seasonality and suitability for specific dietary requirements. Each item on our menu is evaluated based on questions such as:

  • Does it provide a balance of macro- and micronutrients?

  • Is the cooking method appropriate?

  • Does it use fresh, seasonal ingredients?

  • Is it free from additives? Does it contain refined ingredients?

  • What are its salt and fibre levels, and what is the quality of the fats used?

  • Is it suitable for specific dietary requirements, such as vegan or gluten-free diets?

How to Read the Index

Each menu item is assigned a health score from 1 to 5:

5
Meets the criteria to a high degree. It is natural, seasonal and free from additives, prepared using a healthier cooking method, suitable for specific dietary requirements and rich in fibre.

4
Meets most of the criteria, with some room for improvement. For example, it may use healthy fats but have room for improvement in terms of seasonal freshness.

3
Meets some of the core health principles, but certain shortcomings are noticeable. For example, it may be free from additives but have a higher salt content.

2
Does not meet a significant portion of the health criteria. It may contain fried or refined ingredients, or have a high sodium content.

1
Classified as less healthy. It may contain processed or additive-containing ingredients, be prepared using frying methods, and have a less balanced nutritional profile.

Komünite Health Index Principles

1. Macro- and Micronutrient Balance

We pay attention to the balance of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats, as well as vitamins and minerals, in every dish. Our menus are designed to include a balanced range of different food groups.

2. Healthy Cooking Methods

To minimise nutrient loss, we favour grilling, baking and steaming over frying.

3. Fresh, Seasonal Fruit and Vegetables

We regularly refresh our menus with seasonal fruit and vegetables, taking care to serve them at their freshest and most nutritious.

4. Healthier Alternatives on Our Beverage Menu

We offer beverage options made with natural ingredients to help manage sugar intake from drinks, including detox drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails and non-alcoholic beers.

5. Additive-Free, House-Made Options

We do not use products containing high levels of additives, such as ready-made salad dressings, mayonnaise, ketchup, stock cubes or frozen fries. Instead, we prepare our own sauces in-house and favour fresh ingredients.

6. A Variety of Bread Options

To meet different dietary needs, we offer a selection of wholegrain, sourdough and gluten-free breads.

7. Dietary Requirements and Allergy Awareness

We offer vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives, as well as specially prepared dishes for guests with allergies or intolerances. We also provide regular training for our service staff to ensure they can provide guests with accurate information.

8. Natural and Unrefined Foods

Wherever possible, we use natural, additive-free and unrefined ingredients in our dishes, helping us preserve both flavour and nutritional value.

9. Healthy Fats

We prioritise high-quality extra virgin olive oil and real butter in our dishes. Trans fats and low-quality refined oils are not used in our kitchen.

10. Organic Chicken and Eggs

When sourcing eggs and chicken, we choose organic products from trusted sources, offering products without unwanted residues such as hormones and antibiotics.

11. Safe and Hygienically Handled Greens

We make sure that the greens used in our salads are fresh and in season, and that their pesticide analysis results have been checked.

12. Reduced Sodium (Salt)

To help reduce excessive salt intake, we prioritise herbs and spices such as thyme, rosemary and basil when preparing our dishes. We reduce the use of high-sodium ingredients such as soy sauce and ready-made stock cubes, or opt for lower-sodium alternatives where possible.

13. Increasing Fibre Content

We include wholegrain products such as whole wheat bread, brown rice and bulgur, as well as legumes such as lentils and chickpeas, to offer fibre-rich options across our menu.

14. Sustainable Packaging and Food Waste Reduction

We favour environmentally friendly packaging, particularly for takeaway orders, and aim to minimise food waste through careful planning and measured preparation.

15. Staff Training and Awareness

At regular intervals, we provide our kitchen and service teams with training to reinforce these health-focused principles.
