Gözyaşı Çetesi brings its singular musical universe to Komünite on February 5 at 9:30 PM.

Though rooted in alternative rock, Gözyaşı Çetesi has gradually evolved into a more fluid collective, an organism that operates by its own rules. The group brings together musicians whose paths have crossed in different corners of Istanbul’s alternative music scene since the early 2000s. What began as a duo formed by Pınar Balcı and Umut Arabacı took its current shape with the addition of Faruk Kavi, Sinan Tınar, Anıl Dağ, Volkan İncüvez, Emir Akçit and Gökhan Sürer.

Bringing together electronic, progressive and psychedelic music with Anatolian melodies and a broad range of references—from African rhythms to Berlin techno—Gözyaşı Çetesi introduced its distinctive sound with its debut album, Garip Davam (2016), followed by Karar (2018), which took their musical world further. After a long hiatus, the group recently broke its silence with the 15-minute “Yengeç Kızlar” and its similarly minded, otherworldly counterpart, “#hücumkızlar.” They continue to expand the boundaries of their singular universe, picking up where they left off.

Gözyaşı Çetesi’s defining quality, however, reveals itself most fully in the live setting. Performances often begin with songs familiar from their albums, only to unfold into extended improvisations where even the band itself may not know what comes next. Intricate patterns and long-form improvisations born from the energy of the moment can lead in entirely different directions each time. At one festival, they played a single piece for an hour and a half before leaving the stage.

Shaped by an exchange with the audience, their concerts can create a ritualistic atmosphere that sometimes grows into an exuberant, collective convergence, while at other times leading inward, toward a more introspective journey. There is no fixed route. Anything can happen.
